Ruth Kemna is a young artist, violist, performer and director. Her work is characterised by interdisciplinary projects that combine dance, theatre, video and circus in unusual ways with contemporary music and its relationship to nature and society.
She studied at the Hanover University of Music, Theatre and Media, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama London and the University Mozarteum Salzburg and holds master degrees as a Concert Violist and in Applied Theatre. Her professors were among others Volker Jacobsen and Veronika Hagen-Di Ronza. She has taken part in masterclasses with Jean Sulem, Tatjana Masurenko, Thomas Riebl, Hartmut Rohde, Barbara Westphal and Garth Knox. Her viola theatre piece "Biographie: reset oder auf der Suche nach Kylvirien" was awarded the Prize for Excellence for an exceptional master's thesis by the University Mozarteum Salzburg.
She has performed at numerous international festivals such as the Ruhrtriennale, the Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, the Davos Festival, the Heidelberger Frühling or the Fusion. Tours and projects have taken her to almost all European countries, Venezuela, Ecuador, China, the DR Congo, South Africa and Tunisia.
Ruth Kemna has played with Klangforum Wien and Ensemble Modern, was solo violist of the Hamburger Camerata, had a temporary contract with the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and was a long-standing member of the Orchester im Treppenhaus.
She is part of the artist collective Group 50:50 between the DR Congo, Switzerland and Germany which is creating activistic music theatre projects in postcolonial contexts.
For many years she has been developing her own performances and installation projects, combining music, sounds, human bodies, texts and videos with utopian ideas, fantastic images and activist actions that subtly draw attention to social injustice or environmental pollution. As part of the family farm, she looks for artistic approaches to shed light on the human relationship to agrarian culture and agricultural labour.
A focus of her work is the development of transnational projects in the Mediterranean region as bridges between the African and European continents.

Ruth Kemna ist eine junge Künstlerin, Bratschistin, Performerin und Regisseurin. Ihre Arbeit zeichnet sich durch interdisziplinäre Projekte aus, die Tanz, Theater, Video und Zirkus auf ungewöhnliche Weise mit zeitgenössischer Musik und deren Beziehungen zu Natur und Gesellschaft verbinden.
Sie studierte an der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, der Guildhall School of Music and Drama London und der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg und hat Master Abschlüsse als Konzertviolistin und in Applied Theatre. Ihre Professor:innen waren unter anderem Volker Jacobsen und Veronika Hagen-Di Ronza. Sie hat an Meisterkursen bei Jean Sulem, Tatjana Masurenko, Thomas Riebl, Hartmut Rohde, Barbara Westphal und Garth Knox teilgenommen. Ihr Bratschentheaterstück "Biographie: reset oder auf der Suche nach Kylvirien" wurde von der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg mit dem Preis der Exzellenz für eine außergewöhnliche Masterarbeit ausgezeichnet.
Sie trat bei zahlreichen internationalen Festivals wie der Ruhrtriennale, dem Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus, dem Davos Festival, dem Heidelberger Frühling oder der Fusion auf. Tourneen und Projekte führten sie in fast alle europäischen Länder, nach Venezuela, Ecuador, China, in die DR Kongo, nach Südafrika und Tunesien.
Ruth Kemna spielte mit dem Klangforum Wien und dem Ensemble Modern, war Solobratschistin der Hamburger Camerata, hatte einen Zeitvertrag bei der NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover und war langjähriges Mitglied des Orchester im Treppenhaus.
Sie ist Mitglied des Künstler:innenkollektivs Group 50:50 zwischen der DR Kongo, der Schweiz und Deutschland, das aktivistische Musiktheater-Projekte in postkolonialen Kontexten kreiert.
Seit vielen Jahren entwickelt sie eigene Performances und Installationsprojekte, in denen Musik, Klänge, menschliche Körper, Texte und Videos mit utopischen Ideen, fantastischen Bildern und aktivistischen Aktionen verwoben werden, die subtil auf soziale Ungerechtigkeiten oder Umweltverschmutzungen aufmerksam machen. Als Teil des landwirtschaftlichen Familienbetriebs sucht sie nach künstlerischen Ansätzen, um die menschliche Beziehung zur Agrarkultur und zur landwirtschaftlichen Arbeit zu beleuchten.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit ist die Entwicklung transnationaler Projekte im Mittelmeerraum auch als Brücken zwischen dem afrikanischen und dem europäischen Kontinent.

Ha studiato presso l'Università di Musica, Teatro e Media di Hannover, la Guildhall School of Music and Theatre di Londra e l'Università Mozarteum di Salisburgo e ha conseguito master in Viola e Applied Theatre. Il suo progetto di laurea "Biography: reset oder auf der Suche nach Kylvirien" é stato insignito del premio di eccellenza per un master innovativo dell'Università Mozarteum.
Si è esibita in numerosi festival internazionali come la Ruhrtriennale, il Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, il Davos Festival, l'Heidelberger Frühling e il Fusion. Il suo lavoro e progetti l'hanno portata in quasi tutti i Paesi europei, Venezuela, Ecuador, Cina, Repubblica Democratica del Congo e Sudafrica e Tunisi.
Ruth Kemna ha suonato con il Klangforum Wien e l'Ensemble Modern, è stata viola solista della Camerata di Amburgo, ha avuto un contratto temporaneo con la NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover ed è stata a lungo membro dell'Orchester im Treppenhaus. Come musicista e performer solista, ha accompagnato tre tournée del più grande spettacolo di ginnastica d'Europa, il Feuerwerk der Turnkunst.
È membro del collettivo di artisti Group 50:50 tra la Repubblica Democratica del Congo, la Svizzera e la Germania, che crea progetti di teatro musicale attivista in contesti post-coloniali.
Da molti anni sviluppa le sue performance e i suoi progetti di installazione in cui musica e suoni, testi e video si combinano con idee utopiche, immagini fantastiche e azioni attiviste che richiamano l'attenzione sulle ingiustizie sociali e sull'inquinamento ambientale. Inoltre con l'azienda agricola di famiglia, cerca approcci artistici per illuminare il rapporto umano con la cultura agraria e il lavoro agricolo.
Un altro punto focale del suo lavoro è lo sviluppo di progetti transnazionali nell'aera del Mediterraneo come ponte tra il continente africano ed europeo.
